Finally! Southwest Airlines services Minneapolis

With the cost of travel skyrocketing during this shift in the economy, there is one airline that aims to please with low fares and one way flights under 50 dollars.

Southwest Airlines used to be an airline native to the south, east and west coasts- pretty much anywhere except the Midwest.  But wait no more central united statesmen (and women), Southwest has officially opened their Minneapolis terminal for convenient and affordable flights.

plane-on-groundWith the cost of a one way flight to Chicago starting at only 39 dollars, it’s cheaper to fly to Chicago than driving from the Twin Cities to Duluth and back.  The cost of that particular airline ticket costing only 14 dollars more than some airlines charge for a single checked bag.  Southwest brags low fares and no hidden fees.

Unlike Delta, Northwest and United, Southwest Airlines allows two checked bags for free as well as free curbside check-in and snacks on the plane.  This is not an uneducated, over-exaggerated claim of Southwest- to be one of the only airlines with such fee-free options- the airline company has done its research and proven to be one of the cheapest and most upfront cost-efficient airlines available.

Surprisingly, lower costs do not mean lower quality standards for Southwest.  Monday’s Star Tribune article described cheering passengers and peppy flight attendants at the first Minnesota Southwest flight gate.  Flight attendants of the first Southwest flight out of Minneapolis Humphrey terminal started their day off at 6 in the morning with a song and dance for the Southwest guinea pig passengers.

“Hold on, wait a minute, gotta put some Southwest in it, gotta put some LOVE in it,” they sang, kicking up their heels as much as a group of Minnesotans will do on a chilly March morning, especially after losing an hour of sleep to daylight saving time.  (Star Tribune)

After flying last week to San Diego, all I can say is the upbeat characteristics of the Minnesota Southwest personnel would have been a pleasant surprise after the droning of automated messages and power-tripping “flight information directors” gave memorized protocol messages through the loud speakers.

One Response to Finally! Southwest Airlines services Minneapolis

  1. I’m no expert on the airlines, but I know Southwest does things in an unconventional way and is a fun place to work, especially for an airline! They are a very efficient provider because of the good moral and should shake up the MPLS market with their entrance into it.
